All pictures can be clicked to enlarge them for details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first part of the document describes what one should take into account when planning the observations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Observations themselves are performed with following steps:<br><strong>I<\/strong> Accessing PEPSI GUI<br><strong>II<\/strong> Connecting with Polarimeter<br><strong>III<\/strong> Selecting and sending targets to LBT<br><strong>IV<\/strong> Guiding<br><strong>V<\/strong>&nbsp;Keeping target in pinhole<br><strong>VI<\/strong> Observing<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The document also describes following items:<br><strong>VII<\/strong> Viewing obtained spectra<br><strong>VIII<\/strong> Estimating S\/N<br><strong>IX<\/strong> Calibration frames<br><strong>X<\/strong> Telemetry<br><strong>XI<\/strong> Troubleshooting<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Planning the observations<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">PEPSI can be used in several observing modes:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pepsi.aip.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/obsmodes_2018.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"160\" src=\"https:\/\/pepsi.aip.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/obsmodes_2018-300x160.png\" alt=\"PEPSI observation modes.\" class=\"wp-image-886\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pepsi.aip.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/obsmodes_2018-300x160.png 300w, https:\/\/pepsi.aip.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/obsmodes_2018-768x410.png 768w, https:\/\/pepsi.aip.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/obsmodes_2018-1024x546.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">PEPSI observation modes.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wavelength coverage:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The entire spectral range is from 383 to 912 nm but it <strong>can not<\/strong> be covered by a single exposure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PEPSI has two arms, <span style=\"color:#2618eb\" class=\"has-inline-color\">blue<\/span> and <span style=\"color:#f0050c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">red<\/span>, that cover spectral ranges 383-544 nm and 544-912 nm, respectively<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each arm has three cross-dispersers:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>CD1 383-426 nm in <span style=\"color:#2d18e6\" class=\"has-inline-color\">blue<\/span> arm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CD2 426-480 nm in <span style=\"color:#2e1ae6\" class=\"has-inline-color\">blue<\/span> arm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CD3 480-544 nm in <span style=\"color:#1818e6\" class=\"has-inline-color\">blue<\/span> arm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CD4 544-627 nm in <span style=\"color:#f00c2a\" class=\"has-inline-color\">red<\/span> arm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CD5 627-741 nm in <span style=\"color:#ed091c\" class=\"has-inline-color\">red<\/span> arm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CD6 741-912 nm in <span style=\"color:#eb071a\" class=\"has-inline-color\">red<\/span> arm<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Simultaneously, one can observe one wavelength region in blue and one in red, however, <strong>CDs 3 and 4 can not be used at the same time<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Spectral resolution:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Polarimetric observations can be done using only one fiber, that is with one resolutions:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>200 \u03bcm gives R=130,000<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Exposure times :<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Exposure time depends on the target and used cross-disperser (use <a href=\"https:\/\/pepsi.aip.de\/?page_id=1410\">Exposure Time Calculator<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One can have different exposure times and numbers of exposures for cross-dispersers in blue and in red arm (examples below)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>30&nbsp;min in blue, 20 min in red \u21d0 red is idle for 10 minutes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>30 min in blue, 2&#215;15 min in red \u21d0 both are ready around the same time<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3&#215;10 min in blue, 6&#215;5 min in red \u21d0 both are ready around the same time, blue likely idle for some minutes due to read-out times (~ 80 sec \/ read-out)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Additional setups:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The blue mirror is the default setting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If interested in good radial velocity stability, simultaneous fabry-perot-etalon (FPE) should be <strong>on<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Filter is selected automatically according the brightness of the target. However, it can be altered on fly to adapt to any changing conditions (e.g. clouds).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PFU beam splitter is selected automatically according the brightness of the target and cross-disperser used<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If PEPSI is used on both telescopes, filters, binning, etc. need to be changed for both sides&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Observing limits:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The lower limit is 26 degrees<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Finding chart:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The field of view for guiding is 28&#8243; so finding chart is of no use<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Observing blocks:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>At the moment observing blocks can be created only by using PEPSI GUI<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">I Accessing PEPSI GUI<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>There are 2 options for from where the observations can be done. <span style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#f10606\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>NOTE<\/strong> <\/span>that for <span style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#f308ef\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Option 2<\/span> you must request VPN access &nbsp;to LBTO beforehand &#8211; at least 10 days before the run.
